Charlotte, NC (April 17, 2026) - As per local news reporting and statements from state troopers, a deadly multi-vehicle crash in Caldwell County late Friday night resulted in the deaths of two people, including an 11-year-old child.

Authorities responded to the collision around 8:46 p.m. along U-64 near Union Baptist Road in Lenoir. According to investigators, a 2018 Ford F-150 traveling east crossed the centerline and struck a 2006 Honda Civic head-on. After the initial impact, the pickup truck left the roadway, hitting a guardrail and a utility pole. The driver of the truck then fled the scene on foot.

The Honda Civic came to rest sideways in the roadway following the crash. Shortly afterward, a second pickup truck, a 2015 Ford F-250 traveling west, collided with the disabled Honda. Emergency crews arriving at the scene found the driver of the Honda, identified as 78-year-old Pink Grant Lackey of Lenoir, along with an 11-year-old front-seat passenger. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the first pickup truck, identified as 20-year-old Matthew Braden Frye of Hickory, was later located in nearby woods and taken into custody. Officials reported that he was not injured. The driver of the second truck, a 22-year-old man from Lenoir, was also unhurt.

Investigators determined that speed and impairment were contributing factors in the initial collision. Frye now faces multiple charges, including two counts of felony death by motor vehicle, driving while impaired, driving after consuming alcohol while under the age of 21, and improper passing. Additional charges may follow pending review with the District Attorney’s Office.

Traffic along U-64 was shut down for several hours as authorities conducted their on-scene investigation and cleared the wreckage.

How Investigations Typically Unfold After A Serious Crash

After incidents like this, attention often shifts from the scene itself to the steps that follow. Investigators review vehicle positions, roadway conditions, and witness statements to better understand how the collision occurred. This process can take time, especially when multiple vehicles and contributing factors are involved.

In many cases, officials also examine whether impairment, speed, or driver behavior played a role. These findings help determine whether charges are appropriate and how responsibility may be assigned. Detailed reports from law enforcement, along with crash reconstruction efforts, often form the foundation for any further legal or insurance-related actions.

In a car accident involving multiple impacts, early documentation can play an important role in how claims are later reviewed. Photos, medical records, and witness information may all contribute to a clearer picture of events, which is why some individuals choose to find a car accident attorney to better understand how these details are evaluated.
