Wilsons Mills, NC (June 10, 2024) - According to local news sources, a tragic multi-car accident on Highway 70 Eastbound in Wilsons Mills led to the death of a woman and injuries to six others. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. near the Swift Creek Road overpass in Johnston County.

The Wilsons Mills Police Department confirmed that the crash involved three cars and a tractor-trailer. The deceased has been identified as 79-year-old Bonney Wheatley of Raleigh. Her husband, who was a passenger in her car, survived but was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Authorities reported that the tractor-trailer, driven by 77-year-old Robert Wallace of Smithfield, failed to slow down for a lane closure, resulting in the collision. Wallace has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and cited for failure to reduce speed.

Six other individuals from the additional cars involved, as well as Wallace, were also injured and transported to local hospitals for treatment. The crash led to the closure of all eastbound lanes of Highway 70 near Swift Creek Road until about 5:45 p.m.
