Charlotte, NC (June 12, 2024) - According to local news sources, a bicyclist was tragically killed in a crash in southwest Charlotte on Wednesday evening. The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. at the intersection of Steele Creek Road and Rigsby Road. When officers arrived, they found 58-year-old Mihael Stegne lying unresponsive in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the collision.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) reported that Stegne was riding his bicycle across Steele Creek Road outside of a designated crosswalk when he was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound. The driver remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation. According to CMPD, Stegne was not wearing a helmet, and excessive speed did not appear to be a factor in the accident. A toxicology report for Stegne is pending.
Multiple units, including CSI, a DWI task force, a motor unit, and a major crash investigation unit, responded to the scene. Detective Mercedes is leading the ongoing investigation. No further details have been released at this time.
