Cherokee County, NC (November 03, 2025) - According to local reports, a tragic collision in Cherokee County claimed the life of 48-year-old bicyclist Helen Runge of Marble on Monday evening. The incident occurred around 4:56 p.m. on Airport Road, where Runge was riding her bicycle westbound when she was struck by a 2005 Jeep also traveling west.

Authorities identified the driver of the Jeep as 46-year-old Christopher Searcy, also of Marble. North Carolina State Highway Patrol Sergeant Christopher Wayne Cook confirmed that Trooper E.J. Watson responded to the scene shortly before 5 p.m. A medical examiner was also called to conduct an on-site examination, followed by an autopsy.

Following the investigation at the scene, officers arrested Searcy and charged him with misdemeanor death by vehicle and driving while his license was revoked. Cook stated that Searcy agreed to a blood test as part of the ongoing investigation. Runge’s family was notified of her death.

The crash temporarily closed a section of Airport Road as emergency crews and investigators worked to document the scene. Authorities have not released further details about contributing factors, but the case remains under review by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
