Charlotte, NC (February 02, 2026) - Reports from local news sources and statements released by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department indicate that a fatal pedestrian crash occurred Monday evening in northeast Charlotte.
According to officials, officers responded around 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. to the 7700 block of North Tryon Street in the University City Division after receiving a call regarding an accident involving personal injury. When authorities arrived, they located 65-year-old Bernard Johnson unresponsive in the roadway. A grey Infiniti was found stopped on the right shoulder nearby.
Charlotte Fire and MEDIC personnel responded to the scene and pronounced Johnson deceased. The driver of the Infiniti sustained minor injuries, was treated, and later released.
Detectives with CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit, along with members of the DWI Task Force and Crime Scene Search, began examining the circumstances surrounding the collision. Preliminary findings indicate that Johnson was attempting to cross North Tryon Street outside of a designated crosswalk when he was struck. Investigators reported that the driver was screened for impairment and determined not to be impaired. It remains unclear whether speed played a role in the crash. Authorities also stated that toxicology results for Johnson are pending.
During the investigation, North Tryon Street inbound from Clark Boulevard to Brookside Lane was temporarily closed as officers processed the scene. Police have not announced whether any charges will be filed. The victim’s next of kin has been notified, and the investigation remains ongoing.
