The Asheville Police Department (APD) reported that 34-year-old Patrick Jeffery Leroy was cycling southbound in the turning lane around 1:12 p.m. near the 2200 block of Hendersonville Road. At the same time, a blue sedan was traveling northbound and made an illegal maneuver by using the turn lane to overtake another vehicle. This ill-advised decision led to a head-on collision with Leroy. Despite the immediate gravity of the situation, the driver of the sedan didn't stop and fled the scene.
Witnesses like Wail Saleh, who works at a smoke shop in the nearby Arden Square Plaza, noticed the ensuing police investigation. I just saw the police outside, and I looked through the window and saw the bike on the ground Saleh stated. He also mentioned that the police were present for approximately four hours and expressed his dismay at the driver's lack of conscience, saying, it's an innocent man just riding a bike around and he just hit him like that and drove off; he should've at least stopped.
Local authorities quickly transported Leroy via Buncombe County EMS to Mission Hospital. Unfortunately, he later succumbed to his injuries. The scene of the accident was marked by Leroy's mangled bicycle and a single sneaker next to car debris in the median.
Three days after the incident, 18-year-old Jayden Smith turned himself into the authorities. He's been charged with felony hit-and-run involving serious injury or death, misdemeanor death by vehicle, no operator's license, and improper passing. He was booked into the Buncombe County Detention Center as the APD continues its investigation in consultation with the Buncombe County District Attorney's Office.
