Lenoir County, NC (February 10, 2026) - Early details from local news reports and statements from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol indicate that two people were injured in a crash involving a tractor-trailer and a Dodge passenger car on NC-11 near Saw Mill Road.

According to troopers, the collision occurred around 11:00 to 11:14 a.m. on February 10 near the intersection of Saw Mill Road, just south of Grifton and in the Kinston area. Investigators said a Dodge driven by 23-year-old Anthony Mayes of Conetoe was traveling northbound at a high rate of speed when he lost control, crossed into the southbound lanes, and collided with a southbound commercial motor vehicle.

The impact caused major damage to the passenger side of the Dodge, which came to rest in the median. Authorities reported that the tractor-trailer, described as an 18-wheeler, lost the rear set of wheels on its trailer and stopped just off the roadway near the intersection. Both southbound lanes of NC-11 were closed for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene and investigate the crash. All lanes have since reopened.

Mayes sustained serious injuries and was transported to ECU Health Medical Center in Greenville for treatment. The driver of the tractor-trailer was taken to UNC Lenoir Health Care with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Troopers stated that Mayes has been charged with careless and reckless driving, driving while license revoked, and multiple additional offenses. The crash remains under investigation.
