Raleigh, NC (March 23, 2025) - According to local news reports, a tragic head-on collision involving a wrong-way driver claimed the lives of two individuals early Sunday morning in Raleigh. The crash occurred around 4:00 a.m. on Interstate 40 East, near Exit 295 at Gorman Street. Authorities confirmed that alcohol was a suspected factor in the crash.
The Raleigh Police Department identified the victims as 37-year-old Alaina Mathews, the driver of a 2024 Volkswagen Taos, and 27-year-old Jonathan Perry Jr., who was driving a 2006 Lexus IS250. Investigators said Perry had entered I-40 East traveling in the wrong direction after turning right from Gorman Street onto the interstate ramp. His vehicle was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes when it collided head-on with Mathews’ vehicle.
Police at the scene noted the presence of alcohol. Reports state Perry smelled of alcohol, and officers discovered an open container located at his feet inside the vehicle. Toxicology results from the Wake County Bureau of Forensic Services are still pending.
Officials believe Mathews attempted to avoid the crash moments before impact. "Evidence on the scene suggests Ms. Mathews attempted to swerve to avoid just prior to impact," said the police. Despite her efforts, both vehicles were severely damaged, and both drivers died at the scene.
The collision forced law enforcement to close all eastbound lanes of I-40 from Exit 293 (US-1) to Exit 295 for over five hours. Emergency responders worked to investigate the scene and safely redirect traffic along the highway’s shoulder. According to Raleigh Police, all lanes reopened around 9:45 a.m. after crews removed the wreckage.
Additionally, police were investigating a separate fatal incident just minutes before the I-40 crash. Around 4:00 a.m., near Kaplan Drive on Gorman Street—approximately three miles from the I-40 crash site—23-year-old Pierre-Louis de Mourgues was struck from behind while riding a RCB e-scooter. The vehicle involved in that hit-and-run dragged the victim down the road before fleeing the scene. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the two accidents are related.
The investigation into both incidents remains ongoing.
