New Bern, NC (May 22, 2024) - According to local news sources, a series of accidents occurred on Highway 55 near the Pamlico County line and in Craven County on Wednesday morning. The incidents, attributed to dense fog, involved multiple vehicles and led to several charges.

The initial accident occurred near the Pamlico County line on Highway 55. Sheriff Chris Davis reported on his Facebook page that traffic was being diverted down Olympia Road due to the incident. Drivers were advised to exercise caution because of the thick fog in the area.

In Craven County, three separate crashes involving six cars happened around 7 a.m. on Highway 55 at Sand Hill Road. The North Carolina Highway Patrol reported that 50-year-old Timothy Guin of Greenville was pulling a boat with his pickup truck and attempting a left turn onto Highway 55 when his truck was struck by a westbound vehicle. Guin was charged with failure to yield.

Following the initial collision, two more accidents occurred as drivers waited for emergency services. High speeds and close following distances in the foggy conditions were cited as contributing factors. James Robinson, 72, of Bayboro, and Megan Troutner, 26, of Aurora, were both charged with failure to reduce speed.

Five people were transported to CarolinaEast Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The WITN Weather Team had issued a First Alert Status due to visibility dropping below 1/4 mile in some areas, affecting multiple counties including Beaufort, Craven, Dare, Hyde, Jones, Onslow, Pamlico, Pender, Tyrrell, and Washington.

Pictures from the crash scene showed a boat fire and emergency services in action, with a grey Ford Mustang and a truck with a boat off its trailer among the damaged vehicles. Despite the severity of the accidents, the road was not closed and was expected to be cleared shortly.
