A workplace harassment concern is better documented through the organization’s reporting channels and dated source records than through a reconstructed account alone.

Preserve what happened

  • The date, location, people involved, exact words or conduct observed, and witnesses
  • Relevant messages, emails, photos, calendar entries, policies, and prior reports
  • A copy of the report submitted and any response received

The EEOC’s employer reporting-system checklist describes reporting and investigation components. It does not determine whether a particular event violated a law or policy.
