Durham, NC (October 25, 2026) - A girl riding a scooter was hospitalized with serious but non-life-threatening injuries after a crash on NC 55 near Cecil Street in Durham, North Carolina. Four other people were hospitalized with minor injuries.
The collision occurred around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, when one vehicle struck three other cars and the scooter.
Durham police suspected the driver of the striking vehicle of alcohol impairment. Police said charges against the driver were pending at the time of the initial report.
Vehicle Count and Injury Coverage Limits
One vehicle struck three other cars and a scooter in the Durham collision, and five people were hospitalized. The number of vehicles struck does not, by itself, establish how much bodily injury liability coverage is available. Under a split-limit policy, the relevant ceilings apply per injured person and per accident, rather than providing a separate injury-coverage allowance for each damaged vehicle.
The per-person limit caps coverage for one person’s injuries. The per-accident limit caps the combined coverage for injuries within that accident, so separate per-person limits cannot simply be added together without regard to the overall ceiling. When evaluating coverage for someone injured in a multi-vehicle collision, car accident attorneys can distinguish the individual ceiling from any shared accident limit. The policy terms and the evidence of responsibility determine which coverage applies.
Understanding Coverage After Several People Are Hurt
For someone hospitalized after a collision involving several vehicles, a quoted insurance limit can leave an important question unanswered: how much applies individually, and how much is shared? An attorney can help explain whether an injury claim may be available and how the applicable limits could affect it.
