Harnett County, NC (October 17, 2026) - Justin Shane Heath, 67, died at the scene of a collision involving his van and a Honda Civic on Saturday night at NC 210 and Old Stage Road near Angier in Harnett County, North Carolina. Multiple people, including van passengers and the Honda driver, were hospitalized.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol investigators said the Honda driver, Joseph King, 52, of Benson, ran a red light and struck the van. The van overturned after the collision. Troopers said impairment was not a factor.

Angier Black River Fire Department and Harnett County EMS responded. Harnett County Sheriff’s Office deputies found both vehicles off the roadway, with multiple occupants trapped in the overturned van. Authorities initiated a mass casualty response, bringing additional resources that included four ambulances, a Johnston County EMS supervisor, Medic 6 from Coats Grove and Medic 8 from Buies Creek. All van passengers were removed and placed in ambulances.

The van passengers were taken to WakeMed Raleigh. Police were seeking information about their conditions and recovery at the time of the initial reporting. King was also taken to WakeMed, with injuries described at that time as serious but not life-threatening.

Highway Patrol troopers from Harnett County’s Troop B District 8 and Johnston County’s Troop C District 6 investigated. The later account reported that King faced a misdemeanor death by motor vehicle charge, an allegation rather than a finding of guilt. The intersection was closed after the collision until about 1 a.m.

Heath was an apostle in Mount Olive and had attended a revival at Freedom Life Church in Angier two hours before the crash. He also served as a Wayne County deputy from 1983 to 1994.

The Emotional Effects of a Serious Collision

Recovery after a serious collision can involve difficult memories as well as physical injuries. When distress interferes with daily life, a treating clinician can assess the concern and discuss appropriate support. The care needed will depend on the person's experience.

An injury claim may address pain and suffering as well as medical expenses, depending on legal responsibility and coverage. A car accident attorney can review the effects of an injury alongside the treatment received. A medical bill alone may not convey the difficulties someone has faced.

Support During a Difficult Recovery

For someone recovering from a collision in which another person died, seeking help can involve both medical and legal questions. Rosensteel Fleishman can explain whether an injury claim may be available and how the effects of the injury may be considered. Medical professionals can guide the person's care and support needs.
