Morganton, NC (October 13, 2026) - One person was hospitalized with minor injuries after a Norfolk Southern train derailed Tuesday afternoon near US 70 and East Fleming Drive in Morganton, Burke County. Morganton Public Safety reported that five rail cars overturned. An engine also derailed.

The reported scene extended along East Union Street between Kirksey Drive and East Fleming Drive. Morganton Public Safety issued its first update at 3:24 p.m.

Officials reported no hazardous-material spill. Burke Rescue also reported no active leaks or evacuation orders.

Traffic was diverted at US 70 and East Fleming Drive. Officials initially expected the intersection involving US 70, East Fleming Drive and East Union Street to close for about 24 hours for investigation and cleanup. East Union Street was closed overnight between the Seiren and Food Lion entrances. A subsequent estimate projected a closure until late Wednesday afternoon, rather than confirming a reopening time.

Morganton Public Safety, Burke County Emergency Management and Burke County EMS secured the scene. Norfolk Southern later assumed operational control and the lead role in the investigation. The cause was unknown at the time of the initial reports, and the investigation was underway.

Medical Expenses After a Derailment

Even an injury initially described as minor can leave someone with questions about treatment costs. A hospital statement identifies the services billed, and billing staff can clarify an unfamiliar charge.

Whether another party may be responsible for those costs is a legal question. Personal injury attorneys can review the circumstances of an accident and explain whether treatment expenses may be included in a claim. The reported hospitalization alone does not establish responsibility for the derailment.
