Wilkesboro, NC (August 26, 2026) - Information from local news reports and North Carolina State Highway Patrol statements indicates that a bicyclist died in a collision with a vehicle near Roaring River on Wednesday morning.

The crash occurred at approximately 10:52 a.m. on Wilkes Yadkin Road near Mathis Farm Road in Wilkes County. David Crews Doyle, 67, of Wilkesboro, was leading a group of three bicyclists traveling south on the road.

At the same time, Michelle Lynn Schwartzbach, 41, of North Wilkesboro, was driving a 2013 Dodge Journey south and began passing the cyclists in a designated passing zone. As the Dodge was passing the group, Doyle started turning left into the parking lot of Cranberry Baptist Church. The vehicle and bicycle then collided.

Doyle was pronounced dead at the scene. The Highway Patrol reported that he was wearing a helmet. Schwartzbach and a juvenile passenger in the Dodge were properly restrained.

The preliminary investigation did not indicate that impairment or excessive speed contributed to the collision. Wilkes Yadkin Road remained closed in the area for approximately two hours while troopers investigated. The Wilkes County District Attorney’s Office was notified of the investigation, and the Highway Patrol reported that no charges would be filed.
