Smithfield, NC (August 08, 2026) - Information provided by local police states that 27-year-old Tremaine White of Roseboro was killed after being struck by a vehicle on South Brightleaf Boulevard.
Smithfield Police officers were dispatched to the area of 2320 S. Brightleaf Blvd. at approximately 12:50 a.m. after receiving a request to check on a person reportedly walking near the roadway. Officers found White deceased at the scene when they arrived.
Investigators determined that a motor vehicle had struck White and that the driver had left the scene. While officers were investigating, 32-year-old Jasmine Ariel Taylor of Four Oaks returned with a family member. Police said Taylor reported that she had struck something in the roadway earlier that night.
Officers subsequently began a driving while impaired investigation. Taylor was arrested and taken to the Johnston County Detention Center, where police said a breath test measured her alcohol concentration at .13. The legal limit is .08.
Taylor was held under a $2,500 secured bond pending an appearance in Smithfield District Court. The fatal collision remains under investigation, and Smithfield Police have consulted with the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office about the possibility of additional charges.
How Investigators and Insurers Review a Fatal Collision
The circumstances and consequences of a fatal collision often become clearer as investigators gather records, interview witnesses, and review physical evidence. Police reports, vehicle damage, roadway evidence, surveillance recordings, toxicology findings, and medical records may all contribute to a more complete account of what happened.
Reviewing a fatal car accident may involve several separate stages, particularly when investigators are considering impaired driving or whether a driver left the scene. An auto accident settlement attorney can help explain how insurance coverage, documented losses, and supporting records are commonly examined when evaluating a civil claim.
Criminal proceedings and insurance claims may move forward on different schedules and apply different legal standards. Families may therefore receive new information gradually as official reports are completed, coverage is confirmed, and the financial effects of the loss are documented.
How a Fatal Accident Can Affect a Family Over Time
The effects of a fatal roadway accident are not limited to the first days after the event. Anniversaries, court dates, insurance correspondence, or returning to the location of the collision may bring back difficult memories. These responses can occur even when family members have resumed work and other daily responsibilities.
Families coping with a sudden loss may also encounter practical and emotional pressures such as:
- Managing funeral expenses and other immediate costs
- Adjusting to the loss of income or household support
- Responding to requests from insurers and investigators
- Keeping track of records, deadlines, and official notices
- Supporting relatives who process grief in different ways
The impact may change over time rather than follow a predictable pattern. Maintaining organized records of expenses, communications, and important dates can help families manage administrative responsibilities while the investigation and related proceedings continue.
Considering the Next Steps After a Fatal Accident in Smithfield, NC
When an investigation, insurance review, and possible court proceedings overlap, documentation and timing can have a direct effect on how a claim is evaluated.
