Greensboro, NC (March 29, 2024) - According to local news sources, a 20-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run incident that left 15 people injured. The Greensboro Police Department reported that Zamyria Nicole Maness of Greensboro was taken into custody on Monday July 1, facing multiple charges.
The incident occurred around 7:21 p.m. on March 29 at the intersection of South Eugene Street and West Whittington Street. Maness is accused of driving into a large crowd, injuring numerous individuals, including students from North Carolina A&T State University. The victims, aged between 18-22 years, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, with the most serious being broken bones.
Maness faces an array of charges including 15 counts of felony hit-and-run, 9 counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, and 6 counts of assault with a deadly weapon. Additional charges include careless and reckless driving, failure to reduce speed, failure to stop at a stop sign, driving without a license, operating a vehicle without insurance, and filing a false report of a stolen vehicle. Her bond is set at $100,000, and her court date is scheduled for August 7.
Eyewitnesses recounted the chaotic scene. Kennedy Stewart, a freshman at NC A&T, described how the car sped through the crowd, causing panic. Another student, identified only as Jacob, mentioned that the event was an unsanctioned party that had been relocated multiple times that evening. He explained that a fight had broken out at the final location, leading to a police intervention and the subsequent panic and crash.
The Greensboro Police Department emphasized that the event was poorly planned and not sanctioned, creating a significant public safety issue. Despite an attempt to hire off-duty officers for traffic control, no officers were available due to short notice and the Easter holiday weekend. The police department continues to work with local partners to improve safety guidelines for future events.
Elvis Casey, a local resident, shared his relief that an arrest was made, noting the fear and chaos his grandson experienced during the incident.
Maness’s vehicle, reported stolen by the registered owner, was found abandoned shortly after the crash. The investigation remains active, with authorities continuing to piece together the events that led to the incident.
