Garner, NC (May 27, 2024) - According to local news sources, two people were killed and a child critically injured after a DWI suspect ran a red light along U.S. 70 in Garner on Memorial Day afternoon. The tragic incident occurred just before 1:25 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. 70 and New Rand Road.

The collision involved a silver Chevrolet Trailblazer, a dark blue Mazda CX5 Select, and a black Cadillac Escalade. Tyler Campbell, 28, the driver of the Mazda, and his passenger, Susan Campbell, 29, both died from their injuries. Their 8-year-old son, Miles, who was also in the Mazda, sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

The driver of the Trailblazer, identified as 25-year-old Jordan Alexander Porter, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital. According to Garner Police Capt. Chris Adams, Porter was charged with driving while impaired. "Investigators learned that the Trailblazer was traveling west on U.S. 70 and ran a red light, striking the Mazda, traveling south on New Rand Road," Adams stated in a news release.

The occupants of the Cadillac Escalade were unharmed, and the vehicle sustained only minor damage. Police noted that more charges are anticipated as the investigation continues.

Family and friends of the Campbells shared that Tyler and Susan were graduates of North Carolina State University and lived just 2.5 miles from the accident scene. Tyler was an Eagle Scout and marathon runner, while Susan worked as a nurse at WakeMed Cary. Their son Miles is a Cub Scout and enjoys playing baseball and participating in martial arts.

Garner Baseball Inc. announced a vigil for the Campbell family at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Lions Field, expressing their heartbreak and support for Miles as he battles for his life.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing, and police have reopened U.S. 70 eastbound to traffic.
