Rolesville, NC (June 2, 2024) - According to local news sources, a tragic accident occurred Sunday night in Wake County, resulting in the death of a 19-year-old man and serious injuries to another driver. The incident began around 10 p.m. when a Wake County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted to stop a speeding vehicle on Interstate 540 near U.S. 401/Louisburg Road in north Raleigh.

Officials report that the driver, identified as Aidan Gambone from Wake Forest, was traveling at over 100 miles per hour in a Nissan 370. Gambone refused to stop, leading deputies on a high-speed chase north on U.S. 401 through the Rolesville area. The pursuit continued until Gambone ran a red light at the intersection of Louisburg Road and Zebulon Road, where he collided with a black Toyota Camry.

The impact of the crash was fatal for Gambone, who was the sole occupant of the Nissan. The driver of the Toyota Camry sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to WakeMed for treatment. The crash site, near the Wake County-Franklin County line, left two lanes of U.S. 401 northbound closed for several hours as authorities conducted their investigation and cleared the scene.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is currently investigating the incident, with initial observations noting visible tire tracks and scattered debris at the crash site. Additionally, a road sign was knocked down during the crash. This incident was one of two reported crashes on Louisburg Road that night, with the second involving a Wake County EMS vehicle. No injuries were reported in the second crash, and its connection to the chase remains unclear.
