Manteo, NC (June 10, 2024) – According to local news sources, a tragic three-vehicle collision occurred on Roanoke Island, leading to one fatality. The accident took place on a Monday morning near the Midway intersection, where U.S. 64 and N.C. 345 intersect.

Robert Hill, Jr., 65, from Georgetown, South Carolina, was pronounced dead following the collision. First Sgt. S.D. Hurley of the North Carolina Highway Patrol stated that Hill likely experienced a medical issue before the crash. "We have to wait for the medical examiner to determine cause of death," Hurley said, noting that there were no signs of recklessness or high speed involved.

Hill was driving a Ford Explorer southbound on U.S. 64 when he crossed the center turn lane into the northbound lane, sideswiping a Mazda CX-5 before striking a GMC Sierra. The collision happened just before 9 a.m. in the westbound lane between Dunkin’ Donuts and Silver Bonsai Gallery, just outside Manteo. All three vehicles were towed from the scene, with two suffering significant damage. The area was cleared by 11:30 a.m.

The occupants of the Mazda were transported to The Outer Banks Hospital as a precaution, while the driver of the GMC refused treatment. No serious injuries were reported among the survivors. Responding agencies included the Roanoke Island Volunteer Fire Department, Dare County EMS, Dare County Sheriff’s Office, and the Highway Patrol.
